Tamu Bakery is a social enterprise dedicated to fighting gender-based violence throughout the world by empowering vulnerable and abused girls and women to speak out.
The word "tamu" comes from Swahili and is an adjective meaning both 'sweet and delicious', and 'soft and gentle'. We chose this as the name for our social enterprise as it encapsulates our mission to improve the lives of victims of gender-based violence through positive therapeutic experiences.
The concept behind our organisation is a simple one - our supporters order one of our delicious cakes, and the funds are used to run baking therapy sessions with vulnerable and abused girls and women around the world, in partnership with host organisations.
Yana Spencer, who runs Tamu Bakery, has many years experience managing projects for human rights NGOs and also provides consultancy to organisations in the areas of human rights and gender-based violence. In 2017 Yana was presented with a 'Women of Peace Award by the International Peacepower Foundation, Inc.
